One of the newest parks in western NC, Gorges was purchased by the state from Duke Energy Corporation in 1999. It encompasses over 7,700 acres, and is known for its steep topography.
It’s also home to towering Rainbow Falls, which showcases a 125-foot waterfall which gently mists visitors from the observation deck. On sunny days, this mist can create a wonderful rainbow effect. Along the same trail is Turtleback Falls, which is a popular swimming spot in summer time, providing visitors with a 10-foot waterslide drop into a deep basin pool.
