Five years ago, Transylvania County Special Olympics held its first Polar Plunge to raise funds for local Special Olympics athletes. Since then the yearly event, held in February on the shore of Lake Atagahi, has grown & become the single fund-raising event for their athletes.
Because of the generosity of our community, both financially and as volunteers, their athletes are able to participate in year-round in sports, including basketball, bocce, bowling, track and field, swimming, and soccer.
Twice a year the athletes spend weekends in Raleigh and Charlotte competing at the State level. And from a historical perspective, in years 2010, 2014, and 2018, a local athlete represented Transylvania county at the National Games.
